Custom Built Furniture
Custom built furniture for business or home. Stop in and let us educate you about the simplicity of designing for home or business. We can build custom furniture from your imagination or replicate your favorite design. It is our goal from the day you begin designing your custom built furniture, for it to be an expression of your character and an example of our quality.
All of our custom made furniture is made here in North Carolina using kiln dried hardwood, double doweling, corner blocks, screw and glued with individually 8-way hand-tied springs. The thread we use is UV protected, nylon, and the foam core inserts are top of the line foam. All down and spring down inserts are made-to-order.
The first photograph below is at East Boulevard Bar and Grill located in Charlotte, NC. About a year ago they updated all their seating in the restuatrant. We built custom banquettes / booths for the entire dining area.
There are places to purchase commercial booths and seating online but from our experience, within 6-12 months, you will need to reupholster or rebuild them because they are poor quality. These pieces lack the same quality standards, have poor pitch and bad springs. Although the cost upfront at DSC is little more to design your own custom seating for business, we make it worth the cost because of our high quality standard. Keeping a high standard ensures our custom furniture will last for years to come. If you are looking for comfort and style for your customers then custom is the way to go.
The second photograph below is a custom built sofa for the 2010 Symphony Guild Designer Showhouse. The two chairs in the foreground were chairs we found on the side of the road that were reupholstered giving them a new life.

Below is a prime example of why you shouldn't toss Grandma’s old sofa! One of our clients brought this sofa to us for reupholstery. She liked the bones and curves of the sofa but disliked everything else. We re-fashioned the arms, removed the skirt and tufting, replaced the legs, switched the old foam inserts with new custom spring down inserts and applied Organic upholstery fabric.

What a fabulous alternative to wallpaper! Wall upholstery adds creativity, depth and dimension unlike paint or wallpaper. Use brass nail heads to create decorative embellishments or simply use double-welt to finish the walls. Wall upholstery also acts as perfect sound insulation for media rooms.
The walls below were upholstered in green velvet fabric and accented with brass nailhead star embellishment for a design firm in Charlotte, NC. Custom wall upholstery is a great way to add texture, personality and color to a room.

Custom Built Banquettes
If you need size-specific seating for your dining area, custom built furniture is the way to go. Custom banquettes designed by you are a perfect alternative to chairs. In large or small areas, banquettes can either be as large as a sofa or as small as a built in nook. For large banquettes, we provide a sample to the client to get a good spatial 'feel' in the room.
The first banquette photograph below was built for a client who needed an update for her breakfast area. A combination of patterns and textures were chosen for this custom banquette. The contrasting welt gives accent to the unique shape of the removable cushions. This piece was designed for a charming old home and is a great way to utilize a very tight space with a unique twist to the standard kitchen table and chairs.
The second banquette below was designed by Missy Luczak, Interior Designer with Meyer-Greeson-Paullin-Benson. She designed this custom banquette to accommodate a large breakfast room. The fabric is corduroy with decorative brass nailhead trim to add dimension at the bottom.

Custom Built Cocktail Ottomans
Custom built ottomans are a wonderful addition to any sofa, loveseat or seating area. The standard height you would purchase in a store is 18". By designing a custom made ottoman you can specifically suit the size of your furniture, add casters for rolling or include storage. There are so many optinos for custom made ottomans.
The custom cocktail ottoman pictured below is a good example of the care we put into creating special pieces for your furniture design. The zebra pelts were pieced together to create this ottoman top. The zebra pieces are from a collection of skins a customer brought to us from her father’s hunting expeditions. Many of the pieces were nothing more than strips. We placed them together like a puzzle to create upholstery fabric for this custom ottoman, a constant reminder of her father.

Custom Built Beds & Headboards
We grew discouraged knowing you were paying top dollar for headboards and beds constructed out of inferior and weak products. For nearly the same price you would pay at Restoration Hardware or Crate and Barrel, you can purchase a bed or headboard through us, design your own furniture specifically for your space and taste. Custom built beds and upholstered headboards are yet another way to express your own design vision and creativity. We can replicate or modify any headboard you find in a magazine or design store. You may choose the fabric and color as well as nailhead trim.
The custom made bed pictured below is a walnut finished framed bed. The headboard insert is upholstered in a cream colored tweed and accented with polished chrome and individually placed nailheads.
The second photograph is an example of our custom built winged headboard. The client chose a luxorious orange cut velvet fabric to give their bedroom a pop of color.

Custom Built Cornice Boards
Take your color and design “up” by designing your own window treatment with custom cornice boards. Because they can be reupholstered, cornice boards are an inexpensive design element to your windows and your room. Choose from our in-house designs or create your own.
The first photograph is of a cornice that is 280 ft. long. It is upholstered in faux leather with an upholstered border accenting the cornice. We created a paper pattern on-site prior to transferring the pattern back to our shop to create the actual cornice.
The second cornice board was constructed and upholstered for Charlotte Home-A-Rama. It is accented with pyramid-shaped nail head trim, using faux leather. We went on site to create the pattern prior to fabricating it at the shop.
