THE BEST PART IS THE HISTORY

I love my job. I am always taken back by the stories behind special, sentimental family heirlooms. For example, a customer, stopped by this morning to take a peak at an antique, empire/sleeper sofa we are reupholstering for her mother who has Alzheimer's. Anne's mother is moving from her home of 54 years, to a condo for better proximity to Anne, her caretaker. As we were discussing changes she wanted for the sofa, she shared with me the sweetest story:

The sofa has been in the family since her 84 year-old mother was a girl. Anne, herself, recalls sleeping on the sofa when she was a child. I could feel the love in Anne's heart toward her mother as she spoke of her and shared her own memories of growing up with that sofa. When her mother's health began deteriorating, choosing a safe place for her mother to move was of utmost importance. After choosing the condo and preparing to move, Anne came across newspaper clippings in her mother's belongings.

In 1949, her parents were chosen as "June Bride and Bridegroom". Their pictures were posted in local newspapers and for other advertisement promotions. As Anne was perusing through pictures and articles, one particularly caught her attention. There was her father, holding her mother, at the threshold of an opened door to a new apartment complex in Charlotte. Upon closer inspection, Anne discovered that upon the very threshold her father held her mother, was the condo Anne had just purchased for her mother! Sixty-one years later! Not just the same complex... the exact same unit!

Wow. I love my job!

What a great story! not only she able to give her mother the 'gift' of an heirloom that has been a part of her life, her mother is able to spend her glory years in the very home she started her life with her husband. It's a great feeling to help people hold on to the memories they cherish the most!
